Ollie Acton

Freestyle

Ollie Started windsurfing aged 15 and was instantly hooked, practising at his home spot in Emsworth. These days he mainly windsurfs at Esso on Hayling Island or West Wittering.  Ollie is also an intermediate windsurf and SUP instructor.

Ollie first started competing at the National Windsurf festival in 2010 where he won the amateur fleet. The following year he competed at the national freestyle championships at Poole Windfest and won the men’s amateurs, after that event he was picked up by Andy Biggs Watersports and bought a quiver of Tushingham Edges.

He is currently a student at Southampton Solent University where he has helped to set up and run the windsurf team there.  Although they are a small team they have been doing very well at the SWA events since the teams inception. In the 2011-2012 season Ollie was crowned the student freestyle champion and won BUCS Gold in the mens team racing along with fellow Tushingham rider Sam Sills and Adam ‘Chubsey’ Chubbock.

UKWA Freestyle West Witterings

This was by far the best conditions I’ve ever competed in! 2XS at West Witterings provided the venue for the second event in the UKWA Freestyle calendar, and what a location to hold a competition in.

The wind was forecast to be marginal but by midday I was on my 4.2 Edge fully powered in the glassy flat lagoon, this set the scene for some high class freestyle action.  The pro’s were on another level with spock culo’s, skopu’s and other crazy named moves while the amateurs were also pulling off big moves much as funnels, esliders and double flakas in almost every round! I entered in the amateurs and somehow managed to come second after Saturdays competition, something I can be pretty proud considering the level was really high. The pictures below are of the last heat of the day, just as the wind dropped so I changed up to my 5.5 Rock.

Dissertation done, time to windsurf!

Dissertation hand in and windsurf! This has been a good end to the week.

The biggest project I’ll ever do at University is finally handed in, where for the past few months the dissertation has taken over my life.  This has meant not a great deal of windsurfing for me, I’ve only managed to get out on the water once since January and that was in the snow!

Dissertation

But after all the hard work and stress from doing my dissertation I was rewarded with a really nice session at my local spot in Emsworth.   Located in Chichester Harbour, Emsworth can be perfect for flat water blasting and freestyle.  The wind was a solid 20 knots but forecast to drop so I used my 5.5 Rock and 101 Flare and had an awesome session; it was also the first time this year without gloves or a hood!  So all in all I’m pretty relieved the dissertation is finished with and I can now hopefully get on the water a lot more.

Another Pondlife Write-Up…

So you’ve already had write ups from Tushingham riders Louis and Jo, now it’s my turn…

Last weekend saw the final ‘core’ event of the student series, Nottingham Pondlife! This was my first time to Nottingham and the event certainly did not disappoint with 2 epic nights out and 1 day of wind it was almost the perfect competition weekend. But it was so COLD!!! I have no idea what the temperature was but in 7 years of windsurfing this was the most painfully cold session I’ve ever had.

Heading upwind

Nonetheless on Sunday we had about 15-22ish knots of wind, enough for a freestyle competition! I grabbed my 5.5 Rock, which although is aimed towards wave sailing it’s a perfect light wind freestyle sail. As with sod’s law, the wind died as soon as we started competing, so the first rounds turned into lightwind freestyle flick-flack but thankfully the wind picked up just enough for the final. With it being so gusty on the lake and Louis’ ability to plane in almost no wind I started to worry in the final as he was doing a lot of old school carving freestyle, whilst I was bobbing around in the middle of the lake waiting for a gust. Thankfully half way through the final that gust came and I managed to flaka, which impressed the judges enough to win the competition.

Flaka

The bitterly cold conditions at the weekend convinced me that I needed to get away in the summer for a windsurfing holiday. So just yesterday I booked flights to Fuerteventura with my girlfriend for windsurfing in the sun, we’ll be going during the PWA event at Sotavento in July, can’t wait!

Spock

For me its back to the dissertation for another month then I’ll be competing at my last ever student windsurf event, the student nationals. It’s sure to be a big finale. See you there!
