Freeride 6.0-8.5m

The ultimate no-cam blasting experience

Built to excel at blasting and gybing, we really struggle to find words that do justice to this Ken Black masterpiece.

Low-end is smooth, yet powerful, while effortless rotation in manoeuvres and stability through a massive wind range continues to earn the T4 glowing reports from the world’s most thorough magazine testers.

The T4 proved very capable in competition against fully cammed race sails during the Ledge Point to Lancelin marathon in Australia, finishing first no-cam and ahead of many full race sails!

Popular for its simple rigging and tuning, paired with easy efficiency on the water, the T4 unleashes top performance to all levels of windsurfer.

Tuning tips

Downhaul tension:

Familiarise yourself with a minimum and maximum setting for your sail plus a mid-point which is a good place to start for most sailing. Fine-tuning between these settings will really help you get a feel for how the sail can be tuned and cover all wind conditions.

  • MINIMUM SETTING for light winds: downhaul so leech is loose to the 2nd batten.
  • MID-POINT SETTING for most “comfortably powered” sailing: as above but with a loose leech to the 3rd batten.
  • MAXIMUM SETTING for overpowered windy conditions: loose leech to the fourth batten down.

Just one centimetre more or less downhaul can make the diference between good control and being pulled out of shape while sailing. If you’re struggling on the water come in and change settings! Two minutes to do this could transform your session from a struggle to perfection!

The smaller T4 sizes (6.0 - 7.0) can be used in light winds with low downhaul. There still needs to be enough outhaul to pull the tip of the battens above and below the boom back at least to the side of the mast. Bigger sizes (7.5 - 8.5) need to be downhauled so that the sleeve tension is close to the guide marks - even in lighter winds.

Outhaul tension:

Whatever your downhaul setting, for most freeride sailing your sail will work best with 2-3cm of positive outhaul tension.

When more downhaul is applied the mast bends more so it’s important to check the outhaul and re-tension. If downhaul is slackened off it’s also necessary to take a little outhaul tension off the sail.

Trim

  • LOOKING FOR MORE CONTROL – apply 1-2cm more downhaul
  • LOOKING FOR ULTIMATE DOWNWIND SPEED – let off the outhaul by about 1-2cm so there is no tension (called neutral). Sailing overpowered will help (using a square metre bigger, well downhauled usually does the trick!)
  • IN NEED OF MORE UPWIND PERFORMANCE – Apply one extra cm of outhaul.
  • UNDERPOWERED – Reduce downhaul to the minimum setting (see downhaul section) and reduce outhaul so battens above and below the boom sit halfway round the mast when the sail is not under load.

Mast Selection

  • The T4 is optimised for standard diameter masts and we highly recommend the Carbon 75 masts for all applications. They induce an efficient foil for the smoothest power delivery, fastest speeds and most stable top-end.
  • For those who only settle for the best, the 100% Ultimate Pro is an excellent upgrade, with immediate gust response and a lighter weight rig for easier handling.
  • The durable FreeWave 45 is a suitable budget alternative.

7.5m Windsurf July 2012

"It is light in the hands and has a very balanced and neutral feel, which makes it a very easy sail to use and get on with. The bottom end grunt is superb and it is also highly responsive to a few pumps, if you feel the need to get going even earlier. At the top end it is a quick sail and in the gusts it never loses its shape, maintaining full control and simply accelerating faster".
