Wave 3.3-6.0m

Supreme control in all conditions

Higher jumps, sharper turns and all-round high wind fun are unlocked by the updated Rock. We don’t believe in offering several confusing ranges of wave sail: Ken Black designed this super-tough wave sail with exceptional tuneability to excel in all conceivable wave and high-wind environments.

It’s accessible on/off power, early planing and fast acceleration firmly place the Rock as a favourite for stunt experts and novice wave riders alike. Ken recognises that most locations aren’t blessed with steady trade winds and focused on bringing control in gusty, choppy conditions that allows riders the freedom to almost forget the rig and remain completely committed to manoeuvres.

Tuning tips

Tuning

The Rock is designed to have a wide variety of settings and can be set to suit different riding styles. There are two distinct methods:

A. Rigging with outhaul tension being the main control (lighter winds or more powerful style)
Tension the downhaul so that the leech is just beginning to go loose between the battens. Now tension the outhaul so that the batten above and below the boom are lying with their front tips approximately midway between the side and the back of the mast.

You can now use the outhaul adjustment to control the sail's power:
To decrease power, increase outhaul tension so the front batten tips are level with or pulled away from the back of the mast. To increase power, ease outhaul tension so that the front tip of the battens are level with the side of the mast (halfway round).

B. Rigging with downhaul tension being the main control (stronger winds or for more forgiving feel)
Tension the downhaul so that the leech is moderately loose between all the upper battens (a fair bit more downhaul than 'A' above) You will only need a few centimetres of outhaul to pull the front tip of the battens between the side and the back of the mast. The outhaul is still used to fine tune the power, but when using this amount of downhaul, it's the downhaul that becomes the dominant control and can be adjusted accordingly. For extreme overpowered conditions the leech can be loose almost all the way to the clew but changing down is preferable where possible!

Trim

  • FOR EXTRA “PUNCH” IN MANOEUVRES OR UNDERPOWERED - Use setting ‘A’ (described in the Tuning section, This allows the battens above and below the boom to rotate with the front tips touching the side of the mast.
  • FOR A LIGHTER, MORE NEUTRAL FEEL IN TRANSITIONS OR OVERPOWERED – Using method ‘B’ with a little more downhaul and 1cm of extra outhaul will help control on the wave face and in strong gusts.
  • HIGH WIND FREERIDE - Reduce outhaul by about 2cm (so there is only a little tension applied)
  • FREESTYLE - Most freestylers prefer rigging style ‘A’ but this is very individual taste so experiment to find the feel that feels most comfortable.

Mast Selection

  • The Rock is optimised for RDM masts and we highly recommend the RD Wave or RD 60 masts for all applications. They also offer superior strength in extreme conditions.
  • The standard diameter Carbon 75 and FreeWave 45 are also compatible.
