07/05/08 TurfDog Man Wins Bournemouth Freewave

National Windsurfing Week kicked off all round the country this weekend and in Bournemouth the UKWA were in full flow running the first Freewave of the year as well as a Slalom Championship.

Freestyle competition was the chosen discipline for the Freewave, due to the moderate wind and flat water. There was a healthy turn out, with 14 competitors entered and a mens and ladies division. Adam Cropper took time out from his TurfDog demo and won the freestyle ahead of Joe O’Callaghan in 2nd and Seb Willis in 3rd. Jennifer Kelsik narrowly beat Sarah Bibby in the girls.

Many thanks to Ian Jones, for skilfully running the competition.

Adam Cropper is sponsored by Tushingham, Starboard and TurfDog Land Windsurf Boards.

24/04/08 National Windsurfing Week & The Windsurfing Movie

Back in the eighties in seemed as if every other car had a windsurfer strapped to the roof and every pond, lake and stretch of coastline was decorated with an array of brightly coloured triangular sails. Since then the sport has taken a lower profile, but all that is beginning to change. Modern design and manufacturing techniques have resulted in equipment that is far easier to learn on, and today’s participants are taking the sport in directions only dreamed of by the original pioneers. It's therefore not surprising that windsurfing is experiencing a worldwide renaissance.

To celebrate this, a group of UK enthusiasts have created National Windsurfing Week, which will run from 3-11 May and feature a host of activities taking place across the country, including many opportunities for the public to try windsurfing free of charge. Full details can be found at www.nationalwindsurfingweek.org

To get things off on the right note, there is going to be a special screening of the iconic film "The Windsurfing Movie" at The Prince Charles Cinema near Leicester Square in London, on the evening of Tuesday 29th April. This will be the first, and probably only, opportunity to see what many feel to be the best film ever made about windsurfing on a big screen.

Tickets for the showing are £10 each, and can be booked in advance by calling the box office on 0870 811 2559, or purchased on the door subject to availability.

All profits will be donated to the RNLI.

Doors open at 6.00pm with the film being shown at 6.45pm

20/04/08 Rock Rescued by Rat Rigs!

Tushingham rider John Hibbard had a busy schedule last week. After taking part in the main photo shoot for Starboard in Maui, he had to hurry back to make the last ferry over to Ireland for the first UKWA “Four Nations” wave event at Brandon Bay, Co. Kerry. After a lengthy delay in San Francisco, John reached London with literally hours to spare before his overnight ferry. Disaster struck though when John learnt that his quiver of Rocks and RD Wave masts had not been loaded onto the plane.

With no time to ship new sails and no-one from Tushingham anywhere near London, John had think… and think fast! Then in a flash of inspiration he remembered Scotty from Rat Rigs Watersports in Cardiff sails with the Rock and is located more or less on the route through Wales to the ferry. A quick phone call ensued, followed by a sigh of relief after Scotty’s affirmative response.

John collected Scotty’s quiver on the way through and they’ve seen some great action in the contest. You can view and read all about the action at www.boardseekermag.com and www.ukwindsurfing.com

A big thanks to Scotty, check out his shop at www.ratrigs.com

18/04/08 Reaching a wider audience!

In a move aimed at promoting the "outdoor" lifestyle, Land Rover have used the Tushingham Storm and Starboard Acid models as part of their current ad campaign.

Excellent choice of windsurfing kit chaps!

07/08/08 DEVON FUN SLALOM & TECHNIQUE CLINIC

Are you a windsurfer based in the South-West and keen on honing your technique at going fast and tuning your kit? Former Olympic competitor, World Raceboard Champion and three-times British Slalom Champion Dave Hackford will be on hand to offer coaching through the afternoon then run some fun racing through the evening.

Seasports Southwest, based in Teignmouth, South Devon recently opened their new RYA centre. As part of their National Windsurfing Week initiative they are promoting an afternoon and evening of intermediate and advanced coaching on ‘making your kit go fast’, and finishing the day off with some simple ‘in and out’ slalom racing. There will be prizes but more importantly it should be an afternoon session that will certainly help any windsurfer improve sailing technique.

Dave Hackford says “This will not be any ordinary clinic. Apart from the beach tuition we will have a vast selection of the very latest boards from Starboard – including iSonics. For those that want to give these a go, we will be on the beach to set them up with GPS systems. If we can’t get you to exceed 30knots, as long as the wind blows, we will be disappointed. Paul Simmons our ‘Driven by Wind’ team rider will have just returned from the Defi Wind Slalom event in France – and he will be bringing along all his racing armour for anybody to try. Even if the conditions are light we will have boards like the Serenity or Gemini for everyone to try – so come along wind or not. We will be there”

Starboard and Tushingham will be on site with their extensive demo trailor, that now includes Stand Up Paddle Boards

If you are keen to join in please give Seasports a call on 01626 772555, or email Tushingham at windsurfing@tushingham.com

If the weather is good Seasports will be running a barbeque – so some idea of numbers will help.

Date: WEDNESDAY MAY 7th

Venue: Seasports Southwest, Teignmouth, Devon

Start time: 3pm – leading to racing and barbeque/prizegiving later.

So book this in your diary..... WEDNESDAY 7th MAY - it will be fun and rewarding evening for everyone whatever the weather!
