Bloodworth Success on TK 5.5
The 23rd Eric Twiname Championships were held at Rutand Water on 9th & 10th May and were particularly successful for a Tushingham rider. Young racer Henry Bloodworth (HB) took first place in the Techno 5.5 fleet with two firsts and two second places.
HB commented:
"This was only my second competition with the TK rig. I like the high winds and the bigger courses but when it's really windy I'd prefer my Flare freestyle board!"
The event is the pinnacle of the RYA’s Junior racing calendar, with young competitors in over 285 boats and windsurfers pitting their sailing skills against the best young talents from each of six English Zones, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, in a bid to help their Zone or home country team clinch the coveted Eric Twiname Shield at the end of the weekend.
This year HB's result helped the SE Zone to take victory by the closest of margins, ahead of the South region. Full event results here

Top Windsurfing Weekend in the UK!
 The weekend of May 16th & 17th saw a strong breeze across most parts of the UK, a timely arrival with the UK's first national slalom event of the season taking place at Rhosneigr, Anglesey. The location simultaneously hosted the second round of the UKWA wave series. As the wind and waves increased, both the wave and slalom competitions provided a spectacular sight for the masses of onlookers. Alan Jackson, racing with a 5m Rock (wave sail!) took a superb second place behind PWA competitor Mat Pearch and ahead of last year's champion Jamie Hawkins. Marie Buchanan (pictured) took second in the Challenge fleet, first lady.
Tushingham's Paul Simmons took eighth in the slalom and commented:
"What a superb day of top racing. The conditions weren't even enough to run a wave heat at first but how they changed! It was testing for everyone and great to see the Challenge Fleet still out there racing in logo high breaking waves at the outer gybe mark! Thanks to all the organisers, plus the strong contingent of Irish competitors who made it over"
Meanwhile in Worthing, Sussex, George Shillito was providing the local windsurfers with a special treat - a Tushingham & Starboard demo day combined with good wind! George told us there were plenty of people trying all the kit all through the day. The Starboard Kode 86 was the most popular board, bringing praise from everyone and convincing several people that it was to be their next purchase! The Storm F10 was well liked too - with 5.0-5.75m being the most popular sizes. |
Windsurfing on TV!
The BBC’s ‘THE ONE SHOW’ recently ran a feature on how Hayling Island and Peter Chilvers have a claim to fame for being the birth place and inventor of windsurfing 50 years ago!
It’s virtually unheard of that six million people get to see windsurfing on national TV. It’s just as rare to get the chance to sail a replica of the very first windsurfing board ever made! Tushingham rider Simon Bornhoft and two of his young coaching prodigies, Ed & Harry De Blaby, were privileged to be part of an historic windsurfing moment - captured by the BBC.
The feature showed the original windsurfer being sailed at Fleet Creek where windsurfing was invented plus interviews with Chilvers and some windy sunny action from Hayling seafront.
An interesting and enjoyable piece of television holding the attention of windsurfers and non-windsurfers. Well done to everyone involved for portraying our sport in a very positive light on national TV. It makes a change to holiday presenters falling off deliberately because the director thinks it looks amusing...

Irish Slalom Series Round 4, Downings, Donegal 18th & 19th July
Tushingham's Paul Simmons heard what a superb event the Downings slalom has been in recent years and is coming over to this spectacular event in 2009. Not only to compete but he'll also be bringing along a load of the latest demo kit plus prizes!
The fourth stop of the series takes competitors to the beautiful north western shores at Downings, Co.Donegal. It's guaranteed to be Ireland's biggest windsurfing event with a current forecast suggesting in excess of 100 competitors! With a big function planned for Saturday night and fleets to suit all abilities you'd be mad to miss it!
